Clashes in Baghdad, Iraq, kill six, including four police officers

AFP. Six people, including four security personnel, have been killed in violent clashes between two local tribes in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirmed the incident on Sunday.

The dispute that began on Saturday night in the plains of Baghdad was over a hike in the price of private electricity generators. Most citizens in Iraq have to rely on private generators due to long daily interruptions in government electricity services.

Four security personnel, including two senior officers, were killed when an attack on security forces that arrived to control the clashes. Although it was previously reported that two people had died, the ministry said the number had been revised after two more died during treatment.

Nine security personnel were injured in the incident. The ministry said that the group that attacked the security personnel opened fire and two were killed in retaliation.

Five people involved in the clashes were injured and some people have been taken into custody.

Ethnic and sectarian clashes have become commonplace in Iraq. Decades of war, unrest and instability have caused even minor disputes to escalate into deadly clashes. Local factions operate according to their own rules, codes of conduct and justice systems, and they also have large quantities of weapons. (RSS)
