Jhapa: 95 dead in a year, more than 52,000 drivers prosecuted

Jhapa. In the fiscal year 2081/82 (Shrawan-Asar), 95 people lost their lives in 1,296 vehicle accidents in the district. 1,934 people were slightly injured and 139 were seriously injured in the accidents.

According to Chief Police Inspector Ganesh Poudel of the District Traffic Police Office, Jhapa, action has been taken against 52,875 drivers in a year. A revenue of Rs 39.555 crore has been collected from this action. 3,174 people have been prosecuted for drunk driving (Drunk Driving), from which a fine of more than Rs 1.8 million has been collected, informed Police Inspector Poudel.

In the traffic awareness program across the district, 8,461 school-level students have been given classes on traffic rules, while 1,250 have been trained in drunk driving awareness, Poudel said. He informed that the Traffic Violation Record System (TVRS) and online fine payment system have been implemented to make traffic management technology-friendly.

In the last fiscal year 2081/82, the office used 70 reflector belts, 30 traffic sign boards, 4 magic lights, 3 breathalyzers, 7 computers, 1 GoPro camera and 1 laptop for vehicle regulation.

Poudel said that the local level, schools, hospitals, media organizations and community centers have collaborated in the traffic improvement campaign. He said that the program, targeting students from classes 6 to 10, auto/city drivers and other sections of society, has given a message of common efforts in road safety. (RSS)
