Myagdi – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the government is actively working to make mountaineering safer. Speaking at a ceremony organized today by Annapurna Rural Municipality in Narcheyang, Ward No. 4, on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the Annapurna expedition, Prime Minister Oli said that the government has been working to reduce the risks associated with mountaineering.
He said, “The government has trained skilled personnel and developed necessary infrastructure along climbing routes, which is why the number of climbers attempting Mount Everest has increased. The government is also focused on constructing and upgrading trekking routes that connect to the base camps of mountains like Annapurna.”
Prime Minister Oli also mentioned that the government has given high priority to upgrading the Kaligandaki Corridor, which connects Mustang’s Korala border point through Myagdi. He said the government is committed to building physical infrastructure at Korala Pass.
Recalling that 75 years ago, French climber Maurice Herzog’s team opened the doors to Nepal’s mountaineering potential by climbing Annapurna, he praised the Sherpa community for their contributions to the development of mountain tourism.
He added, “Maurice’s book Annapurna helped introduce Nepal and its mountains to the world.” Herzog successfully climbed the 8,091-meter-high Annapurna on June 3, 1950.
The Diamond Jubilee celebration was attended by Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Pandey, and Minister of State for Energy, Irrigation and Water Resources Khamba Bahadur Garbuja, among others.
