Kathmandu – Newly appointed Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Bishwanath Paudel, has stated that the central bank will carry out its responsibilities in alignment with the government’s fiscal policy, while maintaining the autonomy of the institution.

Assuming office today at the central bank’s Baluwatar office, Governor Paudel emphasized that Nepal Rastra Bank will operate in support of fiscal policy goals set by the government.

“Whatever is determined by fiscal policy will be supported by monetary policy,” he said. “Regulation and supervision are also key responsibilities. Rather than tightening the system by making excessive rules, we need to strengthen our supervisory capacity. For that, the capabilities of the central bank must be enhanced.”

He also stated that the protection of citizens’ deposits in banks and financial institutions, and the improvement of credit policies, would be among the central bank’s top priorities. Additionally, he mentioned that the bank will make decisions only after proper coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Regarding the resignation of Executive Director Gunakar Bhatta, Paudel remarked that it is an internal matter of the central bank.

On his first day in office, Governor Paudel also signed decisions related to the printing of banknotes in denominations of Rs. 50 and Rs. 1,000.
