Bhaktapur. The Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center, Bhaktapur has successfully performed a third successful kidney transplant in a single person.
At a press conference organized on Saturday, the center’s executive director Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha said that it was the first time in Nepal that a third successful kidney transplant was performed in a single person.
He said that although the third transplant was very complicated, the success has now set an example that kidney transplants are possible in Nepal.
On Bhadra 9, former Minister of Sudurpaschim Province and Honorable Laxmikishore Chaudhary underwent his third kidney transplant and was discharged on Saturday, informed Dr. Shrestha.
Chaudhary’s first kidney transplant was performed in Lucknow, India, while the second and current third transplants were performed at the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in 2072 BS under the leadership of Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha. He informed that Chaudhary’s third transplant was done by exchanging organs between non-relatives under the ‘pair exchange’ system.
The second kidney transplant in the same person in Nepal was started in 2010 at Bir Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Shrestha, and the third transplant is a very rare achievement, the center said. The transplant center has said that in the 13 years of its establishment, it has successfully performed 1,502 kidney transplants and 35 liver transplants.
