Kathmandu. Telecom service providers have deactivated unregistered social media platforms in Nepal as per the government’s directive.

Nepal Telecom and Ncell have deactivated unregistered social media platforms across the country following a letter from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

Nepal Telecom has stated that such social media platforms have been shut down for the time being as per the same directive as it had written a letter to deactivate unlisted social media platforms operating in Nepal through a notification.

Telecom has stated that the decision was taken by the telecom in accordance with the letter from the authority and the order of the Supreme Court, the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal, and the ministerial decision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Ncell has also stated that it has deactivated unregistered social media platforms in Nepal on its network as per the government’s directive.

The authority had written a letter on Thursday requesting the deactivation of 26 different social media platforms. These include social media platforms including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.
